Kiscelli Museum: The Transformation of a Challenging Event Space

Some venues seem to work almost effortlessly as event spaces, while others require more thoughtful planning, creativity and vision. This venue was definitely one of the latter.

The impressive ceiling height, monumental scale and historic, church-like character of the space offered unique possibilities, while also presenting a significant challenge: how do you bring warmth, life and the right atmosphere into a fundamentally dark and completely empty space?

The solution lay in carefully considered spatial planning, spectacular lighting and a cohesive approach to the décor. With a venue of this scale, precise planning is essential. We designed the entire event setup in 3D, allowing us to visualise the furniture layout, guest flow, décor, technical elements and key focal points of the space well before the installation began. This enabled us to think through every detail in advance and see exactly how all the individual elements would work together.

Lighting played a defining role in shaping the space. Using different spotlights and lighting effects, we highlighted the venue’s most characteristic features, while suspended crystal chandeliers and a large mirrored disco ball added striking visual elements. The décor was also carefully designed to work in harmony with both the lighting and the character of the venue.
Tall floral arrangements, delicate taper candles and suspended chandeliers all helped us incorporate the impressive ceiling height into the overall design. The floral arrangements featured both upward-reaching and cascading forms, while the candles added another layer of verticality to the tables. We further enhanced the elegant overall look with gold accents. These details complemented the historic, church character of the space with a more refined and sophisticated aesthetic.

As a result, the lighting, décor, furniture and the venue itself came together to create one cohesive visual experience. Once the moving lights and disco ball were activated, the entire space took on a completely new atmosphere. The light did not simply illuminate the space. It gave it a new identity.

The venue was handed over to us almost completely empty, which meant that virtually every element had to be designed and built from scratch. At the same time, this gave us an incredible amount of creative freedom. From the furniture layout and décor to the lighting and technical production, every element could be tailored to the event concept and the client’s vision.

What was initially a dark, monumental, empty space was ultimately transformed into a warm, elegant, and dynamic event venue. The venue’s original character was preserved, while the lighting, decor, furnishings, and technical production created an entirely new event atmosphere. The end result wasn’t simply a decorated venue, but a space designed specifically around the guest experience. And if you’re curious about what the guests said when they first walked into the room, check out our venue reveal video on Instagram here.

We can’t wait to bring new ideas and concepts to life at this unique venue for other events in the future. Even during this current project, we’ve already come up with countless new ideas about all the possibilities this space still holds.
